HostPapa decided to take the initiative of “going green” by purchasing 100% green renewable energy to power their data center, web servers, office computers, laptops and office space. These energy sources which supply HostPapa’s entire equivalent energy consumption into the power-grid with certified 100% renewable green energy sources, such as wind and solar-powered energy.
How did they do it?
Realistically Hostpapa didn’t put a wind turbine on the roof of their data center! It would have been a nice thing to do, but at the moment its just not practical. Instead Hostpapa carried our a comprehensive energy audit by an outside specialist to calculate their total electrical energy consumption “from traditional sources.” HostPapa then purchased what are known as “green energy tags” or certificates from a certified green energy supplier.
So they calculated the total energy consumption of their operation and then use their green energy suppliers to give back 100% equivalent energy back to the power grid. This effectively balances the (CO2) energy that Hostpapa would require from non-green sources. Hostpapa calculated that, within a year of purchsing green energy certificates, they have removed approximately 4,000 kg of CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases affecting the environment. That equates with removing two cars from the highway for a 12-month period!
